Environmental laboratories Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study

A Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study is a structured and systematic examination of a planned or existing process or operation in order to identify and evaluate problems that may represent risks to personnel or environment or equipment, or prevent efficient operation. A HAZOP Study is a qualitative technique based on guide-words and is carried out by a multi-disciplinary team (HAZOP team) during a set of meetings.

The HAZOP study should preferably be carried out as early in the design phase as possible - to have influence on the design. It is also carried out as a final check when the detailed design has been completed. A HAZOP study may also be conducted on an existing facility to identify modifications that should be implemented to reduce risk and operability problems. Often the Government authorities insist on carrying out HAZOP Studies of the new processes or plant modifications. Responsible organizations act proactively and carry out HAZOP Study on their own.

HAZOP studies may also be used more extensively, including:
  • At the initial concept stage when design drawings are available.
  • When the final piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) are available.
  • During construction and installation to ensure that recommendations are implemented.
  • During commissioning.
  • During operation to ensure that plant emergency and operating procedures are regularly reviewed and updated as required.

GLens Labs is conducting HAZOP Studies in Refinery, LPG Recovery plant, Cement plants, Oil & Gas pipelines, Power plants, Chemical and Petrochemical Industries & various steel plants. Our experience involves providing the necessary personnel to participate in HAZOP studies according to the client or design.

GLens Labs, Chennai was established in 2005 with the mission of offering holistic environmental analytical services. It is the off-spring of A&B Labs, Houston, USA, which is one of the highly certified and accredited labs in USA for Environmental Services (NELAP), Industrial Hygiene study (AIHA), Analysis of Drinking Water (TCEQ), Asbestos (NVLAP, DSHS), Microbiological (DSHS), and Soil (USDA Permit).

GLens Labs is accredited by various agencies such as NABL, MoEF, OSHA 18001 and ISO 9001, and provides a wide range of testing of Air, Water, Soil, Solid & Hazardous Waste, Occupational Health & Hygiene Study, HAZOP Study, LDAR(Leak Detection And Repair) Program etc. Indian Standard/ USEPA /Other International Standard / CPCB approved methods are being followed for monitoring and analysis.

Environmental laboratories Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) Study

Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) is a program implemented to comply with environmental regulations for reducing the fugitive emissions of targeted chemicals into the environment. Several standards such as Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards, New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) require the monitoring and reporting of these fugitive emissions from process equipment.

Leaking equipment, such as valves, pumps, and connectors, are a large source of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and volatile hazardous air pollutants (VHAPs). The Leak Detection and Repair Program is intended for use by regulated entities, such as petroleum refineries, Pharmaceutical companies and chemical manufacturing facilities, as well as compliance inspectors. It focuses on Method 21 requirements and describes the practices that can be used to increase the effectiveness of an LDAR program.

In addition to control fugitive emissions, LDAR Program also helps the industries to reduce unwanted losses of chemicals and thereby conserving energy & increasing their profitability.

The Following methodology to be adopted during LDAR study:
  • Identify the Chemical streams that must be monitored.
  • Types of components (pumps, valves, connectors, etc.) to be monitored
  • Frequency of monitoring.
  • Actions to be taken if a leak is detected.
  • Length of time in which an attempt to repair the leak must be performed.
  • Actions that must be taken if a leak cannot be repaired within guidelines .
  • Record-keeping and reporting requirements.

GLens Labs, Chennai is specialized in this Leak Detection And Repair (LDAR) Study with all required instruments and expertise. We have already conducted LDAR study in many industries in the past. Chemplast Sanmar & PPG Asian Paints are a few clients who have undertaken GLens Labs’ LDAR Study.
